What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are a class of cosmetic injectables that can be used to instantly add volume to the face, body, and other features in order to make a variety of aesthetic enhancements – like smoothing out visible lines and wrinkles or improving overall contours. Many patients prefer injectable dermal fillers, which are completely nonsurgical, over fat transfer surgery and other procedures that require an extended recovery period, anesthesia, and other downsides. Some of the most popular injectable dermal fillers used today include JUVÉDERM® and VOLUMA®. At San Diego Plastic Surgery Center led by Dr. Jose, Dr. Jose Rodriguez and his team provide both of these options for patients wanting to restore lost volume and enhance their facial features. Within our San Diego, CA facility, we are dedicated to helping our patients look and feel their best by providing desirable results.
How Do Dermal Fillers Work?
Dermal fillers work by adding volume to the target treatment area via injection. Once the patient is relaxed and comfortable with a local anesthetic, the dermal filler material is injected beneath the skin using a fine-gauge needle and syringe. Our experienced providers may then manually massage the filler material to ensure a smooth, even, natural-looking outcome. Many fillers, like JUVÉDERM, contain hyaluronic acid (HA) – which is also found in the body naturally – which allows the filler to flex and move with a patient’s expressions for an even more natural look. Over time, the body “breaks down” the fillers, which can then be reinjected to restore a smooth, youthful appearance once again.
